Licensed Clinical Social Worker, CSAC | Founder & Executive Director of Addiction Services

Hello, I’m Paula, the founder of Soar & Rest Outpatient Addiction and Mental Health Services, a counseling service dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey to recovery from addiction and mental health challenges. As a trauma-informed, licensed clinical social worker with a specialization in addiction recovery, my mission is deeply personal—having grown up in Newport News, I’ve seen firsthand the impact substance use and mental health struggles have had on individuals, families, and our community. Newport News has experienced significant challenges with substance use overdoses, and I am committed to giving back by offering compassionate, expert care to those in need. Before I became a clinical social worker, I spent years as a cosmetologist in the beauty industry. What began as a career in hairstyling quickly evolved into something much deeper. As a stylist, I found that my role often extended far beyond creating beautiful hair. Clients, both men and women, confided in me, sharing their life stress, struggles, and personal stories. Many times, I found myself offering advice, support, and empathy as I listened. The trust they placed in me led to more meaningful conversations, and I quickly realized that my natural abilities—discretion, attentiveness, and relatability—could be channeled into a more formal capacity to help others. It was then that I decided to pursue education in social work. Though I was initially skeptical, the advice I received to pursue addiction counseling resonated with me, and I embraced the calling.

Over the years, I have come to deeply appreciate the healing power of empathy, laughter, and simply being a good listener. While I am not personally in recovery, I have dedicated my life to walking alongside individuals who seek freedom from the grip of addiction. I understand the power of support and guidance, and I am passionate about helping others reclaim their lives. As a wife, mother of three adult daughters, and a pastor’s wife, I wear many hats, each bringing a unique perspective to the work I do. I know the importance of family and community, and it’s my honor to serve my hometown of Newport News. Whether it’s through individual counseling or group therapy, I find immense value in the connections that form when clients come together to share their experiences. Group settings allow clients to gain powerful insights into the severity of their addiction, and I have witnessed firsthand the transformation that happens when they begin to see they are not alone. Living on the Peninsula, I love being close to the natural beauty of the area. Anyone who knows me knows you’ll often find me at one of our local beaches, embracing the calm and tranquility the water offers.

I believe in the importance of self-care, balance, and finding peace—values I share with those I work with. At Soar & Rest Outpatient Addiction and Mental Health Services, LLC, my goal is simple: to help people, help people. I take pride in supervising a team of passionate professionals who are also dedicated to guiding individuals through their recovery journeys. Whether it’s through individual therapy or the strength of group support, I am here to walk with you every step of the way. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my mission. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you, support you, and help you find the freedom you deserve.
